Oberst (Colonel) Herman Dietrich is a character in Indiana Jones & the Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was assigned the task of finding the Ark along with Major Gobler. He didn't realize that the excavation had been done in the wrong place until Belloq saw diggers a good distance away from the main digsite. They descended upon the diggers led by Sallah and claimed the Ark for themselves. Indy escaped from the Nazis and managed to take the Ark back from them but Dietrich and his soldiers caught up with him out on the sea where they took back the Ark from Indy but he wasn't captured as Captain Katanga told them that he had killed Indy. They did capture again after he had surrendered to them after trying to blow up the Ark. Dietrich later dies a very gruesome death when he looks into the opened Ark of the Covenant and his head shrinks, resulting in his death.

Dietrich doesn't appear until the end of Pursuing the Ark where he, along with Toht and Belloq, is in the car that Indy pushes off the road. He is seen much more in Opening the Ark when he's first seen by the ark when Indy threatens to blow it up with a Bazooka and later when he and Toht captures Jones and Marion. Dietrich is killed when the ark opens and his head shrinks.
After completing Into the Mountains, Dietrich can be bought for 50,000 studs even though he didn't appear in the level at all.

- Dietrich is the only of the three main villains in the game that is never fought as a boss.
- Dietrich is never seen in-game.
- He has the least screen time of the three villains in the movie.
- Dietrich is one of the three enemy Colonels faced by Indy. The other two are Ernst Vogel and Colonel Dovchenko.
- He was acted out by Wolf Kahler.
